Depart your accommodations in the morning and begin a day trip of the Capital City, St. John’s. This tour is an excellent orientation to the history, legend and lore of St. John’s, the oldest community in North America.
Some aspects of the tour include national historic sites such as Cabot Tower, Signal Hill, the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Newfoundland Freshwater Resource Center. Hear the legends of Dead Man’s Pond and Government House and the history surrounding the Colonial Building.
Along the way we will also see modern facilities such as the campus of Memorial University, the Confederation Building, City Hall, Mile One Stadium and the St. John’s Convention Centre. In the afternoon take a boat tour around St. John’s harbour – the most easterly port of call in North America. This was the first stop for most ships heading to the New World. As we go through the entrance of the harbour known as “The Narrows”, you will marvel at the rocky cliffs on each side and wonder how the early explorers ever found this enclosed natural haven.
Sample traditional local cuisine such as cod tongues, mussels or fish and brewis. Many of our restaurants feature the “catch of the day” served to suit your taste. Shop till you drop in our many downtown stores, or our larger shopping centers.
For some nightlife excitement, head to George Street. Here, clubs, pubs, bars and restaurants are stacked and crammed along this famous cobblestone street. Every evening George Street blazes with energy, especially during the George Street Festival – five days and nights of dynamic musical entertainment.
Here, courteous and lively people treat you as friends, willing to send you in the right direction, help you on your way, or even take you there. Always happy to tell a tale, no matter how tall, just to make you smile. This is a city like no other.
