Just a twenty minute drive from your accommodations in St. John’s will bring you to Portugal Cove where you will board one of two ferries that cross the “tickle” to Bell Island. This short ferry ride will bring you to the largest of several island located in Conception Bay.
Settled by farmers in the 1700s, the discovery of iron ore in the late 1800s resulted in a thriving mining community, until the closure of the mines in 1966. During your visit to Bell Island take time to visit the giant murals commemorating the rich history of the island. For the ultimate experience take the underground mine tour. Or, visit the only place in North America where you can see enemy action from World War II and see the relics of four ships sank during the attack.
Enjoy the walking trails, visit the lighthouse, located at one of the most picturesque spots on the island, take in the majestic ocean views or enjoy a cool dip in the North Atlantic. Experience a magnificent sunset from the north side of the island. No wonder Bell Island is known as The Belle of the Bay.
