In 2003, Destination St. John’s developed an awards program to recognize service excellence in front-line employees. The Silver Puffin Awards have been developed to reward front-line employees for their service achievements. DSJ felt that it should recognize the efforts of the front line workers who act as ambassadors to travellers in our region. Whether it’s the bellman who greets visitors, the waitress at a restaurant or a guide at one of our historic sites, they are, in themselves, part of the tourism attraction base of our region. They are one of the reasons why the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is so well known for its warm, hospitable people. Nominations will be accepted from tourists, local residents, and colleagues of those being nominated. An independent committee will select winners in four categories: • Retail Service • Server (e.g. wait staff, bartender, etc) • Guest Services (e.g. front desk, concierge, housekeeping, etc.) • Tour Guide (e.g. attractions, tour companies, boat tours) Ballots are available throughout the Eastern region at restaurants, bars, attractions and accommodations. The awards will be presented at a luncheon to be held in conjunction with the Destination St. John’s Annual General Meeting.
